williamsburg: the open-air art gallery

img_0261.jpgwilliamsburg, brooklyn, where i live, is a 50-block open-air art gallery. the exhibition surfaces are the walls of warehouses nd townhouses, the cement of sidewalks and parking lots. the predominant medium is paint, applied with spraycans, brushes, and stencils.

in other words, it's graffitti – but the stunningly meticulous execution of these pieces, and the impressive technical virtuosity of the artists – belies the b-boy tagger stereotype. the newer generation of artists, including wk, neck face, kaws, and the group called faile, are bringing to graffiti a new level of artistry, and a new aesthetic of highly illustrative, sharply stylized, and intelligent work.

some photos in the gallery, and more in my flickr account.
